Drupal Wonky Meltdown

I assume that I had the same problem described below the Drupal tutorial.

First I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it and FTP'd the file to my Themes folder on my server. Massive wonkiness was the result. White page with scrambled text etc. I even had a hard time regaining the control panel.

I recovered the previous default Drupal theme, wiped my brow and came here to see what I could have done wrong.

I read the post about uploading the Zip file to the Root folder on my server and then unzipping it, so I gave it a try.

I uploaded the file to the Root and unzipped it. I then went to the Themes to find it and it wasn't there. So I deleted the files and gave up.

What am I missing here? I've tried two sites now. One that was just a basic PSD to CSS and it has glitches that I can't figure out, so I tried the Drupal route and kerpow... it blew up in my face. :)

Either I'm slow or this isn't as easy as Shaun makes it seem in his tutorials.

Cheers. I'm back to coding by hand.
